With cruise calls on the rise, stakeholders remain optimistic that the sector will play a growing role in supporting tourism recovery, creating jobs, and showcasing Kenya as a premier destination along the Indian Ocean.

The Port of Mombasa on Sunday morning welcomed the first cruise ship of the year, with the luxury liner MV Crystal Symphony docking at the coastal port carrying more than 1,000 guests on board.

The vessel arrived from Port Elizabeth, South Africa, marking its second call to Kenya after making its inaugural visit last year, in a development that highlights growing confidence in the country as a cruise tourism destination.

Measuring 238 metres in length with a draft of eight metres, the MV Crystal Symphony sailed into Mombasa at the start of what Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) says is expected to be a busy cruise season. The ship will spend a full day in port before continuing its voyage toward India.

During their stopover, passengers are set to experience some of Kenya’s most iconic attractions, including wildlife safaris, guided tours of Mombasa’s historic and vibrant streets, and visits to other local sites along the coast. The visit is expected to provide a boost to local businesses, tour operators, and the wider tourism value chain.

Crystal Symphony’s Cruise Entertainment Director, Vicky Vantassel, said the guests were delighted to return to Kenya.

“We’ve received such a warm welcome,” she said. “Everyone is excited to explore Kenya, even if just for the day.” She noted that many passengers were eager to experience the country’s culture, scenery, and hospitality, which have made Kenya a memorable stop on the cruise itinerary.

Kenya Ports Authority reaffirmed its commitment to positioning Mombasa as a leading cruise destination in the region.

KPA Corporation Secretary and General Manager, Board and Legal Services, Turasha Kinyanjui, said the authority is focused on improving the overall guest experience at the port.

Speaking on behalf of KPA Managing Director Captain William Ruto, Kinyanjui said the port is dedicated to upgrading facilities and strengthening collaboration with key stakeholders to support cruise tourism growth.

He emphasized that continuous improvements are being made to ensure efficient operations and a welcoming environment for international cruise vessels and their passengers.

The arrival of the MV Crystal Symphony signals a strong start to the cruise tourism calendar at the Port of Mombasa.

According to KPA, several more cruise ships are scheduled to dock in the coming weeks, raising expectations of increased visitor numbers and a positive impact on the coastal economy.

With cruise calls on the rise, stakeholders remain optimistic that the sector will play a growing role in supporting tourism recovery, creating jobs, and showcasing Kenya as a premier destination along the Indian Ocean.
